A Deeper look at

Fauvism

According to (Webster, 2017) Fauvism is seen as a movement in art where the artworks were known to having intensely deep and bright colours which had an overall decorative final finish.

In this piece we can see the realistic skin tone colour pallette of browns, creams and earth tone colours. with the intense vibrant sky blue and hints of red on the clothing and background surface.

Artists could explore all sorts of compositions using this method, from landscapes, portraiture, objects, architecture, etc.

The term Fauv was believed to have meant "work of wild beasts" (boredart.com, 2016) Origination from an inspirational teacher who went by the name of Gustave Moreau a symbollist painter who lived and worked in Paris France Pioneered by artists from Denmark named Henri Matisse, and Andre Derain it took a beautiful, simple and self expressive approach that empasized colour over the realistic values to art that had been made important and core values of Impressionist artists.

Shown below are examples of Fauvism:

Henri Matisse believed in:

"The chief function of colour

should be to serve expression"

(pinimg.com)

Just by what he believed him anyone can see why he used the technique he used in his artworks and just how much he valued the use of colour on a canvas. Artists that used the Fauvism approach felt that the colours used in their artworks did not only have a representational role but rather it was seen as a way to express the subject of which they were trying to emulate or show

Fauvism in the

Contemporary Arena

In the artwork seen to the left of you we see a painting that follows all the Fauvism characteristics in colour, technique and visual appeal. Much like the self portrait painting made by Henri Matisse the artist uses oil painting and shows us just how much detail and skill lines and strokes of paint can resemble beauty.

We can see a refined and sharper edge compared to the representation of e.g hair in this artwork and the hair seen in Henri's self portait. Russell Thomas uses the same approach of framing a particular section and representing it with shadows, highlights and different colour hues to give us an element of depth ,form and pattern. The use of repetition of the brush strokes on the forehead and beard in different colours gives the viewer an element of shape, space, balance, and contrast. All these principles of design being used effectively to represent the artwork in the best and most effective ways.

  1. You provided a good investigation of Fauvism, but unfortunately Fauvism was not one of the movements you had post about. You had to choose between the Glasgow school and Vienna Secession. You also appear to have neglected to post about Cubism.
