Art Nouveau

(Britanicca, 2014) defines Art Nouveau as an artisitic movement first originating in England that dominated Europe and the United States between the times of 1890 and 1914 that sets itself apart from the other artisitic movements uses:

    • Organic shapes,
    • long sinuous lines,
    • decorative elements that drew inspiration from different cultures from around the world
This artistic movement took on many names differing from country to country especially in these few european countries where it took on the name of:

  • Jugendstil in Germany
  • Sezessionstil in Austria
  • Stil Floreale or Stil Liberty in Italy
  • Tiffany Style in America

Much like the other Artistic styles around that time Art Nouveau applied itself and was incorporated in many other disciplines such as Architecture, interior design, Communicative material such as (posters, paintings, furniture), and jewellery to name a few. Art Nouveau emerging from the rebel against artists and graphic designers wanting to break away from the normal and traditional way of thinking saw inspiration to try different arrangements and elements to incorporate into their art.

Other movements that benefitted from artists breaking away from conventional art were movements such as the Vienna Secession that birthed in Austria by a union of artists, carpenters, architects to name a few. Art Nouveau brought on inspiration to one of the most important names in the Viennese Secession (Gustav Klimt). This artist depended highly on potraying his art with hints and elements that brought out his love of the Art Nouveau style shown in this piece below

This piece titled Fulfilment
by Gustav Klimt 1905-1909

This featured subtle elements from the Art Nouveau characteristics showing the organic floral shapes in the background of the hugging male and female figures. It gives the piece an element of balance, calmness as it is not fighting with the main focal point of the two standing figures or the foreground elements. This shows you the reach and adoration of the Art Nouveau movement used by some of the most influential names in Art of all time.

Art Nouveau pioneers believed in making objects we interacted with everyday beautiful and presented in an artistic and decorated way applying them with expensive materials and being applied by only the most skilled artists.it broke the barrier of all art fields whether it be fine art or abstract art and believed in combining elements from all over to bring fourth a new design language that communicated fresh thinking over all areas of design such as interior, furniture and architectural design. Buildings, furniture, posters, artworks, sculptors, clothing were all canvases that needed to portray this art movement. (arts-cork, 2017)

Analysis of Contemporary art piece

and Art Nouveau art piece (Street Poster Art)

This painting titled Princess Hyacinth by Alphonse Mucha,
in 1911 as Street Poster art, Source:gumboimages.com

This Poster From Alphonse features a woman dressed in a cloak and decorated clothing sitting on what appears to be a throne. This Artpiece has all the characteristics and detail of the Art Nouveau style in the background and the detailed garment. The colours used in the background give emphasis and help the focal point of the piece(the woman) stand out and dazzle the viewer with the colours and detailed surroundings and jewellery. Under the visual Art genre, street poster art aims to capture the viewer's attention and show the artists skill through his or her use of colour, elements, and arrangement of fonts/imagery.

This painting titled Marilyn Roses & Thorns by Anyes Galleani
Source: pinimg.com

Anyes's street poster represents an iconic american entertainer/celebrity from the 1950's who is represented as a black and white figure on a black background and surrounded by red roses. This art piece to me shows that the artist also used colour in order to give emphasis to the main figure and making the viewer's eyes draw attention to the face of marilyn by surrounding her with detailed roses that almost look like her hair. The clever layout of the flowers surrounds her face shaping it perfectly without interfering with the main object of focus. As a street poster it has meaning to me compared to the first poster by Alphonse because she was a widely known celebrity who was famous for her beauty and sexual presence.

As a viewer first encountering both posters the Marilyn poster would appeal more to me and draw more attention to me because of its simplicity, colour presence and iconic meaning. This piece features organic shapes and elaborate detail much like the Art Nouveau painting where decorations could be applied to pottery, furniture, clothing and posters, i see this poster also working on clothing as an embroided element and on furniture as an engraved element much like the Alphonse painting.

  1. Thank you for your submission. PLEASE pay careful attention to your layout and formatting of the blog. This haphazard arrangement of information is disconcerting and it makes it very difficult to follow your arguments. Also please consult your guides as to the correct formatting for your references. Why are you discussing Apphonse Mucha under the heading of Analysis of Contemporary Art piece? Again you gave a good analysis of the contemporary artwork, but your arguments about why it is considered to be influenced by Art Nouveau is not very convincing.
