Constructivism
The movement all about your own understanding
1915-1940

An abstract art movement based in Russia and founded by:

Vladimir Tatlin
Alexander Rodchenko

Further artists involved in this avante garde movement included the following Alexandra Exter, Wassily KadinskyAlexander Rodchenko, Robert Adams ,El Lissitzky
Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

What made an Constructivist Artwork?
Having slight resemblances to the futurist fundamentals and treatment of artwork as well as the viewpoint on life constructivists artists believed ion conveying the importance of organisation in the mechanical, physical or man-made materials they used as well as the artwork having to work together not in just parts but instead as a whole object or a complete unit.

Vladimir, who believed that art should be constructed rather that just thought of, really made making art made the idea of rejecting (autonomous art) which was seen as when the artist does not care or represent his/her artwork based on what he wants but rather so that it is conformed to the needs or likes of the outside world or consumer who buys the art, where the artist loses "independence" to do what he or she wants. according to (westland.net)

This art movement that brought  architecture, graphic design, film and photography and showed the importance of the technology sector and glorified the makings of a better and much stronger Soviet Union force that embraced the industrial era. (analogue76.com/)

What Influenced Constructivism
Highly influenced by the industrial revolution as well as the cubist art movement, the importance was to directly show the industrial and modernity of the era in the artwork. The designs were not only seen as Architectural designs or printed materials but also as Textile and Fabric designs to name a few.

Belief System
According to (tate.org.uk) this basic fundamental that was passed on from constructivist to constructivist formulated by Vladimir Tatlin fuelled the ideals and principles of the artists in this movement, which read as follows:

The material formation of the object is to be substituted for its aesthetic combination. The object is to be treated as a whole and thus will be of no discernible
‘style’ but simply a product of an industrial
order like a car, an aeroplane and such like.
Constructivism is a purely technical mastery and organisation of materials.

Art Analysis Old Versus New

Old

Artwork by El Lissitzky, Title "The Constructor", 1924

In this artwork we see a direct influence of the constructivist mindset. The art piece is totally personal and conveys the artists emotions and has no link to him working to please or glorify an elitist target market. It comprises of a man who has a hand coming out of his right hand side holding what looks like a compass or divider.

These instruments normally belonging to architects or mathematicians represent the idea of rebuilding, measuring or constructing something.

Why it works. It glorifies the idea of rebuilding and making ones own future seen by the hands in the artpiece. The colour pallette chosen also represents the machinery age which has greys, whites and an influence of graphic design and photography coming together.

New

Artwork by Zoe Jackson, Title "Russian Constructivism", 2012

Is a poster that has a mix of photography, graphic design to make a complete image that represents politicians being soldiers that fight for the public's peace. The artwork has headings that stand out that read "Keep you Safe" and "Together we can".

Why It doesnt work. The whole composition or message behind this artwork does not show or resemble any traces of Constructivism except how the artist does not conform to autonomous art. Instead the artwork shows the view of the artist herself and her view without any influences
